Mike D. McDaniel, Ph.D.

Dr. McDaniel is an environmental scientist with over 35 years of experience in environmental investigations and regulatory compliance matters. In January, 2004 he was appointed by Governor Kathleen Blanco to serve as Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.

In addition to his current responsibilities as DEQ Secretary, Dr. McDaniel serves as an advisor to a number of environmental-related councils, boards, and commissions. He has also served as an appointed member of the Governor's

Task Force on Environmental Protection and Preservation, the Governor's Mississippi River Corridor Task Force, and the Amite River Basin Commission. 

Prior to being appointed DEQ Secretary, Dr. McDaniel worked as an independent environmental consultant, providing services to both private and public sector clients. 

Before opening the firm of Mike D. McDaniel & Associates in January 1999, Dr. McDaniel served for over five years as Vice President for Woodward-Clyde Consultants, an environmental and engineering consulting firm.

From 1988 to 1992, Dr. McDaniel served as Assistant Secretary, Office of Air Quality and Radiation Protection, in the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.

In addition to the above responsibilities, Dr. McDaniel has served as project manager and technical director for several environmental consulting firms. 

Engineering Environmental Improvements in Louisiana's Coastal Zone

In his presentation, Dr. McDaniel will describe some of the environmental challenges in Louisiana’s coastal zone and some initiatives being undertaken by the state to meet those challenges. Specific needs and opportunities for engineering solutions to assist the state in meeting these challenges will be addressed.
